A blog to publish the findings of our backyard trap (lovingly built by my father and brother) here in sunny and relatively unstudied Grand Cayman.
Who knows, maybe one or two can be identified...

First submission
Already word is spreading and moth appreciation is beginning to grow on the Island - here's a submission from Sandra Gowrie who found this beauty on the wall outside of her house:
Thanks Dad, did you tick one of these off previously? I need to learn how to tag the pics so we get a running list at the sides... so far one name to add!
Kristy, use 'LABELS' when you post stuff. It should be on the menu on the right of the screen when you write a post. Then write in the box using commas in between. For your post you could put- Sandra Gowrie, Rustic Sphinx Moth. They will then appear in LABELS on the blog.
Still feelin' cold..............need some snorkelin'
Matt, did you put all the wires and stuff together too? If so I will scrub 'my father' off this blog immediately - and get a proper sparky round to check the trap ;-)
Thanks for your comment Steve - I'll try to keep the moth pics coming - it would be great to build a decent Cayman moth resource.
Keep the IDs coming though folks otherwise my boys will be mostly naming these moths after Disney characters and race cars!
The original electrics for the trap had LOTS of daddy type input, Matt was just the labourer ! Try tracking down someone on the island who knows the moths, you can then submit photos and/or frozen specimens for ID, if such a person exists. This site may also help :-http://mothphotographersgroup.msstate.edu/slow.php?plate=12.1&page=11&size=s&sort=h . Daddy (Electrical consultant)
Rustic Sphinx Moth
ReplyDeleteManduca rustica, probably the subspecies Manduca rustica cubana.
Nice one Sandra ! :)

P.s. Your Father didn't have anything to do with the trap. IT was a 100% Auntie Matt creation. How very dare you!
ReplyDeleteI love how the Bedfordshire boys have infected Cayman with moth-spirit! I for one will be following your posts with very jealous enthusiasm!
ReplyDeleteCould this be the start of a new online field guide for the Caymans?
Enjoy the obsession as much as we do, it's great fun!
